GRAPELAND – The Grapeland Sandiettes were at home on Friday, March 8 for a game against District 21-2A opponent, the Latexo Lady Tigers.

The Sandiettes, seeking to make another deep run in the playoffs this year, showed the home fans they may have just what it takes to do just that as they made short work of their neighbors from the south by a final score of 16-1 in 3.2 innings.

All-State pitcher Cadie Belle Currie was in the circle for Grapeland and she was flat-out dominant as she held the Lady Tigers hitless and only allowed two baserunners throughout the game.

One of the baserunners was Diana Maza who was hit by a 2-2 pitch from the junior left-hander in the Lady Tigers first at-bat. Bailey Ingle and Madi Catoe both struck out looking and kept Maza at first. That was until Raelyn Walker dropped bunt down in front of home that was fielded by Madi McCombs.

A slick ball, however, appeared to cause McCombs to throw wildly past first base which allowed Maza the chance to race around the base paths and cross home-plate with the first run of the game.

On the play, Walker scampered into third. Unfortunately for Latexo, she was stranded there when Currie got Taryn Curless to swing at a pitch just out of the strike zone for an inning-ending K.

Trailing 1-0 when they came in from the field, the Sandiettes quickly went to work at erasing the deficit. Following a pop-up out by Cierra Simon, Diamond Dunn drew a four-pitch walk from Latexo’s Shelby Abshire.

Cheney Boyd reached on an error which moved Dunn into scoring position at second base. A double steal moved Dunn to third and Boyd to second and was followed by a walk to Currie to load the bases.

Ragan Bowie came into run for Currie and when KeKe Harris slapped a single into right field, Dunn, Boyd and Bowie all crossed the dish to make the score 3-1, in favor of Grapeland. Harris took second on the play.

The Sandiettes appeared poised to break the game wide open but McCombs hit into a fielder’s choice and Haylee Reed popped out to right to end the first inning.

When the Lady Tigers came to bat in the top of the second, Currie wasted little time in retiring the side. Abshire struck out looking on three pitches. Lanie Davis struck out swinging on five pitches and Ebony Perez also struck out looking on three pitches to end the Latexo second.

Grapeland put the game away in the bottom of the inning as the Sandiettes pounded out six runs in their half of the second to take a 9-1 lead.

Paige Mullen led off with a single to left and moved to second when Makayla McCombs was hit by a pitch. Simon was up next and roped a double to center which plated Mullen and moved McCombs to third.

Dunn followed in the batting order and laid down a perfect bunt. She beat out the throw to first, scored McCombs and moved Simon to third.

Boyd followed with a double to left to drive in Simon and Dunn which made the score 7-1. Boyd was caught stealing third but Currie kept the inning going with a bloop single over short.

Once again Bowie came into run for Currie and when Harris punched a single into right, the fleet-footed Bowie came around to score. Madi McCombs ripped a double into the gap which plated Harris and gave the Sandiettes an eight run lead.

Fortunately for Latexo, before the damage was too severe, Abshire was able to retire the next two batters she faced to end the inning.

That, however, brought Currie back to the circle where she continued to demoralize the Lady Tiger hitters. She struck out Kayla Walker on three pitches, forced a pop-up to second from Maza and fanned Ingle to end the top of the third.

Grapeland picked up where they left off in the second and added three more runs to their total. Makayla McCombs led off the bottom of the third with a single. Simon fouled out, but Dunn followed with a walk to move McCombs to second.

Boyd popped up to the catcher and then Currie walked to load the bases. After Bowie came in to run for Currie, Harris hit a shot to second that was booted. The error allowed McCombs, Dunn and Bowie to cross the dish and increase the Sandiettes’ lead to 12-1.

After Madi McCombs grounded out to end the inning, Currie retired the Lady Tigers in order to move the game into the bottom of the fourth.

Abshire recorded two quick outs to start the frame, but a four-run outburst by Grapeland ended the game as the Sandiettes run-ruled the Lady Tigers by a score of 16-1.

Currie picked up the win in four innings of work. She gave up one unearned run but did not allow a hit. She also struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter.

Abshire took the loss in 3.2 innings of work. She gave up 11 hits, 16 runs (12 earned), struck out one and walked five.

At the plate, the Sandiettes were led by KeKe Harris who was 2-3, with four RBI and a run scored. Cheney Boyd was 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
