JEWETT – The Grapeland Sandiettes hit the road on Tuesday, Jan. 29 for a District 20-2A matchup with the Leon Lady Cougars. The #12 ranked Sandiettes came into the game with an unblemished 9-0 record in district play and a two game lead over Centerville and Lovelady in the standings. The Lady Cougars were 5-4 and trying to desperately hang on to the fourth and final playoff berth.

A win for Grapeland would clinch at least a share of the district championship while a win for the Lady Cougars would go a long way to solidify Leon’s playoff chances. The two teams played a relatively close first quarter but a 29-point second quarter from the Sandiettes dashed any upset hopes the Lady Cougars may have had as Grapeland sauntered to an 84-38 win.

As the game got underway, Grapeland’s Teira Jones showed she would be a force to be reckoned with all night as she dropped in six points in the game’s opening quarter. KeKe Harris knocked down a three and a two, Hannah Chipman drained a three-pointer and Tatiana Bowie, as well as Kenya Woods, had two apiece as Grapeland took an early 18-12 lead.

The Leon points came from Tara Goolsby with six, Sarah Rains with four and Sarah Grace Merry with two.

The second quarter belonged to Grapeland as the Sandiettes put up 29 points. Fifteen of those points came from Jones while Chipman netted six. Harris had four as both T. Bowie and Ragan Bowie dropped in a basket to help give Grapeland a 47-24 lead at the break.

Merry paced the Lady Cougars’ attack second period scoring attack with seven points while Raelyn Theiss had four and Jan Brady had one.

After the break, the Sandiettes kept their foot on the accelerator as they poured in 15 points while holding Leon to just eight. Jones continued to dominate inside as she had six points. T. Bowie added three while a trio of Sandiettes – R. Bowie, Chipman and Harris – all had two.

Leon’s point output came from Merry with four while both Goolsby and Kassidy Cravey knocked down two apiece as the Lady Cougars found themselves staring up at a 63-32 deficit after three periods of play.

The fourth quarter saw Grapeland put the game away. KeKe Harris led the charge with eight points while Jones added six more to her total. Woods had four as both R. Bowie and Chipman had two to help give the Sandiettes the 84-38 win.

Merry and Theiss had two apiece for the Lady Cougars in the fourth quarter while Rains and Maddie Thomas each had one.

On the game, Leon was led in scoring by Sarah Grace Merry with 13 points and Tara Goolsby 10. Raelyn Theiss dropped in six, Sarah Rains had five and Kassidy Cravey had two. Jan Brady and Sarah Rains closed out the Lady Cougars’ point production with one each.

Teira Jones paced the Sandiettes with a game-high 33 points. KeKe Harris poured in 19 and Hannah Chipman netted 13. Tatiyana Bowie went for seven as both Ragan Bowie and Kenya Woods had six.

With only two-games left on the district schedule and a two-game lead, the win gives the Sandiettes at least a share of the district crown. With a chance to claim the outright championship on Friday, Grapeland took on the Centerville Lady Tigers. As of press time, however, the score was unavailable.
