Crockett to Hold Precinct Public Meetings

CROCKETT – The city of Crockett has announced a program to hold public meetings, bringing together council members with the public in order to have greater feedback with voters. The meetings, which will be held precinct by precinct, will begin with Precinct One’s Councilman Dennis Ivey next week.
The program was announced by the city’s Community Liaison Rebeca Huffman who told The Messenger the program is called, “Community Roundtable: Conversations with your City on a Precinct Level.” Huffman said, “The main intention is to have community participation between residents and the council person who represents them.”
Part of the program will be reports from various city departments about ongoing projects in each precinct, including Public Works, Utilities, Community Development, Police Department, Fire Department and Public Library.
“There will be a ‘Q and A’ session, so the community will be able to speak,” Huffman said. “These sessions are designed for our residents. The Community Roundtables will be held on the fourth Tuesday of each month until we cover the five precincts.”
While everyone is welcome to attend, Huffman said only questions regarding the precinct in question will be considered, in order to allow the focus to remain on each precinct during their particular meeting.
Several council members have called for more public meetings and interactions, and these meetings should serve as a way for residents to address more local concerns in their part of the city. There is always a public comments section during council meetings, but no response is allowed by the city council, and many issues might be better solved in smaller, more one-on-one venues.
It is unknown if the meetings will continue, in one form or another, after the original round of five meetings in the city’s precincts.
First precinct’s meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Harvest Church, located at 1405 E. Loop 304 in Crockett. For more information, contact the city at 936-544-5156.
