LOVELADY – The 41st Annual Lovefest returns to Lovelady this week with a number of events including the traditional coronation, parade, cook-off and dance to finish off the festivities.

The festivities officially kick off Thursday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. with the Lovefest Coronation. This will be held in the Lovelady High School at the old gym – not to be confused with the other old gym. This is the gym recently used until the completion of the newest gym on the Lovelady campus. Tickets for adults are $4 and $2 for children.

The court for this year’s Lovefest includes:

  • Senior Candidate: Christina Ray
  • Escort: Cameron Lovelady
  • Junior Candidate: Haley Davidson
  • Escort: Travis Cook
  • Sophomore Candidate: Kenya Terry
  • Escort: Tyler Gilchrist
  • Freshman Candidate: Jayda Sherman
  • Escort: Jacob Sherman
  • Train Carrier: Esther Driskell
  • Crown Bearer: Tate McDonald

A fundraiser will be held to raise money for Lovelady High School scholarships at the Lovelady Community Center Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. The baking contest is sponsored by the Weldon Civic Club.

The official parade will begin Saturday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. taking its usual route along TX Highway 19 and the weather for this year’s Lovefest promises to be chilly but dry, with temperatures rising into the low 50’s by the afternoon. The parade promises the classic floats sponsored by different groups along with the well loved antique cars and other surprises.

The barbecue and chili cook-off will take place Friday and Saturday at the old gym and is sponsored by the Lovelady Masonic Lodge #539. The cook-off is hoping to have up to 25 different teams with chicken, ribs, beans and chili on the menu for the judges.

As the Lovefest continues throughout the day Saturday, save energy for the Lovefest Dance, also at the old gym with doors opening at 7 p.m. Local favorite Loose Gravel Band will perform beginning at 8 p.m. with tickets costing $10 for students, $20 for adults, $35 per couple with a $20 cooler charge.

Lovefest is a true cooperation among students, teachers and the community from both Lovelady and all of Houston County.

Look for full reports from all of the festivities in next week’s edition of The Messenger. Better still, forget the umbrella this year and come out and visit the booths, see the parade, try the chili and be part of the 41st annual celebration.
