Area Volleyball Recap – Aug. 28

EAST TEXAS – Just as football season gets underway, the volleyball season for several area schools will enter into district play next week.

Quite a few teams are looking like they may be gearing up for a deep playoff run, while several others are having a rough go of things.

In District 21-2A, the Cayuga Wildcats took care of business with a 3-0 win over the Malakoff Lady Tigers by a score of 25-6, 25-8 and 25-14. Cayuga will begin district play against the Latexo Lady Tigers next Friday, Sept. 7 in Latexo.

The Grapeland Sandiettes welcomed the Huntington Devilettes to Grapeland on Tuesday and fell in three by scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-10. The Sandiettes open district play at home on Sept. 7 against the Neches Lady Tigers.

The Latexo Lady Tigers took on the Kennard Lady Tigers on Tuesday and will open district play at home against Cayuga next Friday while Kennard doesn’t open league play until later in September.

In District 22-2A, the Lovelady Lady Lions dispatched the Corrigan-Camden Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday and will open district play in perhaps the toughest volleyball district in the state with back-to-back games against Iola and Leon in mid-September.

In District 23-2A,the Groveton Lady Indians were in action on Tuesday against the Diboll Lady Jacks and fell in three, The Lady Indians will open district play against the Goodrich Lady Hornets on Friday Sept. 7 at home.

Moving to the Class 3A level, the Westwood Lady Panthers fell to the Neches Lady Tigers by a score of 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-12) and will open district play on Sept. 7 at home against the Buffalo Lady Bison.

The Elkhart Lady Elks fell to the Mildred Lady Eagles in four by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-22 and 25-15. Elkhart opens district play on Friday, Sept. 7 in Frankston against the Frankston Maidens.

At the 4A level, the Palestine Lady Cats fell to the Tyler-John Tyler Lady Lions in five sets by scores of 22-25, 25-13, 20-25, 25-9 and 15-11. The Lady Cats open play in District 19-4A on Sept. 21 against the Fairfield Lady Eagles.

The Madisonville Lady Mustangs fell to the Tarkington Lady Longhorns in four sets last Tuesday and will open district play on the road when they take on the Rusk Lady Eagles on Sept. 21.
