Area Players Named to Class 2A, 3A and 4A TSWA All-State Teams

EAST TEXAS – The Texas Sportswriters Association released its Class 2A, 3A and 4A All-State teams earlier this week and the several area players were selected for recognition.
Starting at the Class 4A level, Argyle pitcher/designated hitter Bryson Hudgens who helped the Eagles to a perfect season and a state championship, was named the player of the year on the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A all-state baseball team. Hudgens, who has signed with Angelo State, was 12-0 on the mound with a 1.06 earned run average. The team’s lone senior starter also batted .417 with four home runs and 43 runs batted in, the TSWA said in a press release.
Just up the road – at the Class 4A level – Madisonville Mustang Zach Poe was selected to the Class 4A All-State Second Team as a first baseman along with teammate Matt Rudis who was selected to the All-State Third as both a pitcher and a third baseman.
In a statement from the TSWA, it was reported, “Central Heights pitcher Grayson Rodriguez, who was drafted in the first round of the major league baseball draft by the Baltimore Orioles, was named the player of the year on the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association Class AAA All-State baseball team. The 6’3”, 230-pound right-hander was 12-0 with a 0.19 earned run average. He struck out 156 in 75 innings, allowing four runs with only two of them earned. He also batted .479 with nine home runs and 49 runs batted in.”
Closer to home, Elkhart Elk Zerick Warren was selected for Honorable Mention honors at catcher.
The Coach of the Year was John Broussard from Georgetown Gateway Prep.
Moving to the Class AA level, Dallardsville Big Sandy outfielder Broch Holmes, who hit 15 home runs and drove in 64 runs to lead the Wildcats to a state championship, was named the player of the year on the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association Class AA All-State baseball team. Holmes, a junior, batted .469 with 20 stolen bases.
The Coach of the Year in Class AA was Jacob Hooker from Dallardsville Big Sandy.
Cayuga Wildcat Andruw Mitchell was selected as a First Team All-State outfielder.
Alto Yellow Jacket Hunter Townsend was selected as a Second Team All-State outfielder.
Honorable Mention recognition was bestowed upon Alto Yellow Jacket Charles Morgan at first base and Cayuga Wildcat Connor Daniel at second base.
