CROCKETT – The Crockett Bulldogs welcomed the Trinity Tigers to town on Friday, March 16 for a District 21-3A matchup between winless teams. Both teams were 0-7 at the start of the game and by the end it was the Tigers who picked up their first win of the season by a final score of 17-7.

Jalyne Carruthers got the start for Crockett and looked good in the early going. Carruthers struck out the first two batters he faced on back-door curves. An error allowed Trinity’s Brady Bawer to reach second base but he was stranded when Carruthers recorded his third strikeout of the inning when he fanned Peyton Leftwich to retire the side.

Bawer was on the mound for Trinity and was equally as effective as Carruthers. He got Jack Meadows to ground out, caught Carruthers chasing a third strike and then retired the side when Jordan Bedford hit into a 5-3 force to end the inning.

Carruthers ran into a bit of trouble in the top of the second but managed to work his way out of a jam. He struck out Grisham Vaught on a called third strike but then an error in the outfield let Tanner Williams reach second base.

Cooper George was hit by Carruthers to put runners at first and second with one out. The Tiger’s Andrew Beasley was up next and flew out to Stephen Deluvia in right field. It looked like Crockett might get out of the inning unscathed, but Carruthers walked Ethan Cheatham to load the bases.

In a classic duel between pitcher and batter, Carruthers fell behind 1-0 to Brayden Greer but managed to even the count at 2-2. Greer then fouled off four consecutive pitches before he managed to draw a ball from Carruthers. With the count now 3-2, Greer fouled off the fifth pitch of the at-bat and then Carruthers threw a nasty slider that caught the corner of the plate for an inning ending K.

The Bulldogs were pumped up after getting out of the jam and took advantage of the situation to plate two runs and take a 2-0 lead at the end of the second inning.

Willie Revels led off the bottom of the second with a walk and after Bawer struck out Weston Reeves, David Cross bunted Revels to second.

A passed ball allowed both Revels and Cross to move up and when Demetrius Williams lined a Bawer pitch into right, both Revels and Cross scampered home to give Crockett the early lead.

Trinity cut the lead in half during the top of the third. Joel Santibanez led off the inning with a walk. After Carruthers recorded two quick outs, he walked Vaught. Santibanez stole third on the next pitch and crossed the plate when Tanner Williams sliced one into right to cut the score to 2-1, in favor of Crockett.

The Bulldogs bats were silent in the bottom of the third, but when the Tigers came to bat, Trinity erupted for five runs to make the score 6-2. Trinity tacked on a run in the fifth and the sixth while keeping the Bulldogs at bay.

With the score 8-2 in the top of the seventh, the Tigers put the game out of reach with a nine run inning to make the score 17-2. Crockett managed to score five runs in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little, too late as Trinity captured the win by a final of 17-7.
