BULLARD – The Grapeland High School golf team has returned to the links and on Monday, Feb. 26, the boys showed they were ready to defend their 2017 state title.

The Sandies traveled to the Eagles’ Bluff Country Club in Bullard for the Brook Hill Spring Golf Classic and tied for first with a team total of 308. Grapeland and Bullard were dead even after the final hole in regulation and the Sandies settled for second following a playoff.

Grapeland was led by Rick Frauenberger who won the gold medal in Austin last year as low scoring individual. Frauenberger continued his dominance on the greens and fairways as he shot a 70 to capture low scoring individual honors by two strokes over Bullard’s Hayes Esposito.

Seniors Case Boyd and Brayden Cheatham also showed they hadn’t lost their touch from last year as Boyd carded a 73 to finish third individually. Cheatham was two strokes back with a 75 and finished in fifth place.

Other team members for Grapeland included Josh “Bear” Ackley, Jason Bobbitt and Dylan Duhon.

This was Frauenberger’s second medal as low scoring individual this year as he defeated Troup’s Jake Smelser and Bullard’s Garrett Esposito in a three-way playoff on Feb. 12.
