GRAPELAND – The Grapeland Sandies are the nine-time defending champs of their basketball district (currently 20-AA) and played like it on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

The Sandies welcomed the Lovelady Lions to town for a league match-up and took the roar out of the Lions with a 33 point second quarter as a part of the 78-56 Grapeland win over Lovelady.

Grapeland came out of the locker room and torched Lovelady in the first half to effectively put the game out of reach. The Sandies held the Lions to seven first quarter points on five from Michael Price and a pair of free throws from Jay Thomas Robinson.

The Sandies spread their point production out as Tyrin Wiley had five, Javion Joseph dropped in four, Keizion Ashford and  Deco Bryant both had three, Rick Frauenberger had two from inside and BJ Howard made one of two from the charity stripe to close out the quarter with Grapeland ahead 18-7.
