HOUSTON COUNTY – It’s mid-January and the action on the hardwood is starting to heat up. In Houston County, the area schools are in three different districts and in three different classifications.

This edition of The Messenger will spotlight the boys as they are at or near the midway point of the district season.

The Crockett Bulldogs are in District 21-3A and currently sit in a tie for second with the Anderson-Shiro Owls with a 5-2 district mark. The Coldspring Trojans sit alone in first with a record of 7-0.

Battling it out for the fourth playoff spot are the Hempstead Bobcats and Trinity Tigers, with 3-3 and 3-4 records, respectively. The New Waverly Bulldogs are currently in sixth place with a record of 1-6, while the Onalaska Wildcats are seventh with a record of 0-7.

Crockett was scheduled to play Trinity on Friday, Jan. 26 but as of press time, the score was unavailable.

At the 2A level, Grapeland, Lovelady and Latexo are all in District 20-2A. Before the Friday, Jan. 26 games, the Big Sandy Wildcats sat atop the standings with a 4-0 record. The Grapeland Sandies were in second place with a 3-1 mark. The Lovelady Lions and Groveton Indians are tied for third place with 2-2 records. The Centerville Tigers are in fifth with a mark of 1-3 while the Latexo Tigers are sixth with a 0-4 record.

Grapeland was scheduled to play Groveton on Friday, Jan. 26 but as of press time the score was unavailable. Lovelady was scheduled to play Latexo while Big Sandy faced off against Centerville on Jan. 26, but as of press time, the scores were unavailable.

Moving to the Class A level, the Kennard Tigers compete in District 28-1A. The Tigers are currently in the hunt for the final playoff spot with a district record of 4-3.

Martinsville is in first with a 6-0 record followed by Wells at 6-1 and Apple Springs at 5-2. Chester is in fifth place with a 2-5 record, Groveton-Centerville is sixth at 1-6 while Burkeville is in seventh with a mark of 0-7.

Kennard was scheduled to take on Martinsville on Friday, Jan. 26 but as of press time, the final score was unavailable.
