Joe Dewitt Jennings

On July 16, 2017, Joe Dewitt Jennings departed this earth at the age of 89. He was born on May, 11, 1928, in Kennard, Texas. He was a 1945 graduate of Kennard High School. Joe Dewitt proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps as a Radar Mechanic Navigation Technician giving valiant service from March 1946 to December 1951, promoted to sergeant November 1948, and earned the Army of Occupational Medal – Japan and the World War II Victory Medal.

Joe Dewitt was employed by Monsanto Chemical Company in Texas City, Texas, for 35 years, retiring in 1986.

He was an avid and competitive breeder of coon dogs and enjoyed the sport immensely, traveling the country, and winning many trophies and awards.

He was a huge fan of the Houston Astros, attending their first game in 1965 at the Houston Astrodome. For his 89th birthday, he received an Astros’ commemorative brick with his name from family which is displayed at Minute Maid Park.

Joe Dewitt is preceded in death by his parents, Wade and Mona Moffitt Jennings; wife, Bobbie Jane Frisby Jennings; brother, Jasper Eugene Jennings; and infant daughter, Violet.

His memory will live on in the hearts who survive him: his sister, Wadell Harrison Calhoun of Crockett, Texas; daughter, Cynthia Jennings Gates and husband, George, of Santa Fe, Texas; son, Joe Bob Jennings and wife, Tina, of Santa Fe, Texas; five loving grandchildren: George Gates, III; Nicole Carver; Garrett Gates; Chanelle Christensen and  husband, Craig; and Jameson Jennings and wife, Alyssa. Joe Dewitt was blessed with five great-grandchildren: Macey Nichols, Gage Carver, Jace Gates, Vera Christensen, and Averie Jennings.

Military graveside services for Joe Dewitt Jennings will be held Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 10 a.m. in the Corinth Cemetery with Dr. Tim Allen officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Callaway-Allee Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be made at www.callawayallee.com
