Slocum ISD Score Rises to 85 as High School Earns an A

SLOCUM — Slocum ISD remained a B-rated district in the Texas Education Agency’s 2026 accountability results, but its overall score improved from 82 to 85 as Slocum High School made one of the district’s most significant gains.
The 2026 ratings were released Aug. 14 and evaluate public schools in three broad areas: Student Achievement, School Progress and Closing the Gaps. Academic Growth and Relative Performance are included within the state’s accountability calculations.
Slocum’s Student Achievement score was 84, rated B. School Progress was 85, also rated B, while Academic Growth was 77, rated C. Relative Performance was 85, rated B, and Closing the Gaps was 84, rated B.
In 2025, the district posted an overall score of 82. Its Student Achievement score was 82, School Progress was 80, Academic Growth was 79, Relative Performance was 80 and Closing the Gaps was 81.
The district’s improvement was driven largely by the high school.
Slocum High School earned an A with a score of 96, up from a B score of 80 in 2025. The high school’s Student Achievement score was 95, while Closing the Gaps was 97. School Progress was 89, rated B.
The high school report lists a 100% graduation rate and a 97 College, Career and Military Readiness score in the measures used for the 2026 accountability calculation.
The high school’s results were not uniformly strong across every state category. Academic Growth was 59, rated F, while Relative Performance was 89, rated B.
The state report includes a technical note explaining that because the high school’s Academic Growth scale score was below 60, the highest Relative Performance score it could receive was 89. That detail illustrates why Texas accountability ratings cannot be understood simply by averaging the letter grades shown for each category. The overall rating is calculated under the state’s specific accountability rules.
Slocum High School was not identified for comprehensive support, targeted support or additional targeted support.
Slocum PK-8 received a B with a score of 84, down slightly from its 2025 score of 86. The campus received a Student Achievement score of 77, rated C, and a School Progress score of 88, rated B.
Academic Growth was one of the PK-8 campus’ strongest areas, with a score of 88. Relative Performance was 83, also rated B. Closing the Gaps was 76, rated C.
The PK-8 campus was not identified for comprehensive support, targeted support or additional targeted support.
The campus-level results show two different stories inside the district. Slocum High School moved from a B to an A and improved its overall score by 16 points. The PK-8 campus remained a B, but its score declined by two points, with Closing the Gaps falling to a C despite strong School Progress and Academic Growth scores.
The state’s all-student data show that 65% of Slocum students met the Meets Grade Level standard or above in reading and language arts. In mathematics, 54% met that standard or above.
The Slocum district profile lists 330 students enrolled across two schools during the 2025-26 school year. The profile reports an attendance rate of 96.4% and chronic absenteeism of 5%. It also lists 68.8% of students as economically disadvantaged.
Slocum’s overall B rating therefore masks a notable shift in the district’s internal results. The high school’s achievement, graduation and postsecondary-readiness measures placed it among the district’s strongest areas, while the PK-8 campus showed solid academic growth but weaker results in Student Achievement and Closing the Gaps.
As with other 2026 ratings, these are the current published results from the Texas Education Agency. TEA has released an appeals process for districts and campuses that believe their ratings should be reviewed.
