HOUSTON COUNTY — Precinct One Constable Morris Luker announced last Thursday that he will retire Wednesday, Sept. 30, after 25 years of service with Houston County. He cited the recommendations of his doctors and thanked those who had stood beside him through personal losses.

“With a heavy heart, it is my duty to announce my retirement,” Luker wrote. “The last 25 years serving with you have been an honor and privilege.”

Luker thanked those who supported him through good times and bad, including the deaths of his mother and sister. He said all three of his doctors had recommended retirement. He also referred to “other troubles” but did not elaborate.

His announcement comes after months of tension with Houston County Commissioners Court over the service of court papers. In January, county officials said unserved documents were delaying court matters and voted to create a part-time deputy constable position in Precinct Two to help with the work. Luker disputed the officials’ account, saying he had told them when he would be away and had requested part-time help.

Luker did not address that dispute directly in his retirement announcement.

County officials confirm several names are under consideration to fill the spot and commissioners court should name a replacement at their next meeting.

“I won’t say goodbye, just see you later,” Luker wrote.
