HOUSTON COUNTY – Houston County Commissioners Court met Thursday, May 4 to extend a declaration of local disaster issued by Houston County Judge Jim Lovell after the recent storms hit the area.

The original declaration was issued April 27 and will now be extended at least until the next commissioners court meeting.

“Due to a series of strong winds, hail and severe thunderstorms on April 26 causing major property damage and power outages,” Lovell told the court. “I’m going to add damages to our county roads and bridges. I would entertain a motion to extend this declaration until our next commissioners meeting.”

The motion was approved unanimously, before the court adjourned after the two minute meeting. The April storm brought over three inches of rain and straight line winds knocking out power to over 6,000 people and scattering trees and limbs in many parts of the county. Windows were shattered in downtown Crockett along with the partial collapse of a roof at one business on the Crockett square.
