Houston County Elections Set Throughout County for May

By Greg Ritchie

Messenger Reporter

HOUSTON COUNTY – Elections for positions of Crockett city mayor, city and school boards and five seats on the county hospital board will be held Saturday, May 6 in different locations throughout the county.

The position of Crockett City Mayor sees incumbent Dr. Ianthia Fisher facing off against Connie Strban, owner of Crockett Springs Real Estate and president of the Downtown Crockett Association.

The Crockett city council will also have two positions with contested races. Current Precinct One Councilman Gene Caldwell is running for the precinct two seat currently held by Darryl Jones. The empty seat in precinct one has three contenders: Samantha Wiley, Joe Don James and Dennis Ivey.

The Crockett Independent School District has two open seats with no contested elections this time around.

The Houston County Hospital District has a whopping five seats up for grabs – all with incumbents and challengers. The hospital district must still verify the information submitted by each candidate but The Messenger will list those who turned in applications to run.

Other local races include positions on several Houston County school boards. As this newspaper has often mentioned, these positions are the heart of our county and our community. These are the people who decide how to use our tax money in the schools, roads and hospital which we could scarcely live without.

The Messenger plans to invite the candidates from many of these races to public forums where you will be able to hear from them directly and make an informed decision. Polling places will vary depending on the race and we will provide the exact locations and voting times before the election day in May.
