Sandiettes Head Back to State in Golf

Grapeland Looks to Defend Class 2A Title

CORSICANA – The Grapeland Sandiettes’ Golf team is headed back to Austin for another crack at the UIL Class 2A State Golf Championship after they finished first in the Region III Golf Tournament held at the Pine Dunes Resort and Golf Club, outside of Frankston.

Collectively, the Sandiettes shot a 716 over two days to win the team title. On Monday, April 21, the Sandies shot a 367 and on Tuesday, they went even lower and carded a 349.

Individually, Cheney Boyd walked off the course as the low-scoring individual after she recorded rounds of 84 and 81 for a two day total of 165. Twelve strokes back – in second place – was teammate Hannah Chipman who shot a first round score of 95 and followed up with an 83 for a combined score of 178.

Bringing home the bronze was Sandiette Mary Jane Watson with a two day total of 183 (92-91). In fourth place was Sandiette Carly Parker with a combined score of 190 (96-94). Also helping the Sandiettes to the Class AA Region III was Tori Woodford with a 216 (103-113).

The race for second place in the team standings was wide open after the first round with Crawford, Latexo and Moody all within 12 shots of each other.

By the end of Day Two, the Latexo Lady Tigers had secured a spot in the state tournament after shooting a combined 948 to finish third in the team standings.

Kyndall Sulewski paced the Lady Tigers with a combined score of 191 (95-96). Maddison Catoe carded a two day total of 234 (111-123). Maggie Gibbons was nipping at Catoe’s heels after she shot a 235 (119-116) while Jamie Welch rounded out the Lady Tigers’ score with a 288 (139-149).

Baylee Granberry  – representing the Lovelady Lions – qualified for the state tournament on an individual basis.

According to the UIL Golf Rules, Section 1260 states, “Each region may qualify the first, second and third place teams and the first, second and third place individual finishers, to state competition. If one of the first three individual finishers is on an advancing team, the next highest ranked individual who is not on an advancing team shall advance. If all three individual finishers are on advancing teams, the next three highest ranked individuals who are not on advancing teams shall advance.”
