GHS Powerlifters Compete in White Oak

WACO – The Grapeland High School Powerlifting team traveled to White Oak on Feb.18 to compete in the 22nd Annual East Texas Powerlifting Championship. According to Powerlifting Head Coach Matthew Gayle, the team brought seven boys and four girls to the competition.

On the girls’ side, Haylee Reed finished fifth in the 114 pound class with a total of 545 pounds lifted. She recorded lifts of 225 pounds in the squat, 90 pounds on the bench press and 230 pounds in the deadlift.

Cheyenne Bowman finished ninth in the 148 pound class with a total of 435 pounds lifted. She recorded lifts of 165 pounds in the squat, 70 pounds on the bench press and 200 pounds in the deadlift.

Elizabeth Thorpe competed in the 165 pound class and finished first with a total of 715 pounds lifted. She recorded lifts of 305 pounds in the squat, 145 pounds on the bench press and 265 pounds in the deadlift.

Victoria Lane competed in the 198 pound class and finished first with a total of 290 pounds lifted. She recorded lifts of 85 pounds in the squat, 60 pounds on the bench press and 145 pounds in the deadlift.

“Haylee Reed and Elizabeth Thorpe made a great push for Regionals, but fell just short. We’re all very proud of them, and how hard they’ve worked this year. The girls placed third as a team at the meet, which is the first team trophy our powerlifting program has won since 2008,” Gayle said.

On the boys’ side, Chris Baker finished fourth in the 114 pound class with a total of 390 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 120 pounds in the squat, 85 pounds on the bench press and 185 pounds in the deadlift.

Bryan Perez finished ninth in the 148 pound class with a total of 675 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 280 pounds in the squat, 95 pounds on the bench press and 300 pounds in the deadlift.

Jay Shepherd finished third in the 165 pound class with a total of 865 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 365 pounds in the squat, 185 pounds on the bench press and 315 pounds in the deadlift.

Jayden Rodemaker also competed in the 165 pound class but was disqualified, however, Gayle stressed he did a good job.

Spencer Martin competed in the 181 pound class and finished eighth with a total of 690 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 270 pounds in the squat, 150 pounds on the bench press and 270 pounds in the deadlift.

Competing in the 242 pound class was Cerdarian Davis who finished in third place with a total of 1060 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 385 pounds in the squat, 290 pounds on the bench press and 470 pounds in the deadlift.

Also competing in the 242 pound class, Franco Rea finished fifth with a total of 1025 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 415 pounds in the squat, 245 pounds in the bench press and 365 pounds in the deadlift.

“The boys’ team also competed well, placing ninth out of 14 teams competing at the White Oak meet,” the coach said. “The only lifter the powerlifting team has advancing to Regionals this year is Cameron Riess.  Cameron will compete in the 181 pound weight class at the THSPA Region III Division III meet in Elkhart on March 10 at 4:30 p.m.
