CROCKETT – The Crockett Bulldogs gained a little breathing room on Tuesday night in their push for the playoffs with their 77-44 defeat of the Coldspring-Oakhurst Trojans. Coupled with a loss by the New Waverly Bulldogs to the Hempstead Bobcats, the Dawgs are now alone in second place with a two game lead over New Waverly with three left to play in District 21-3A competition.

The Dawgs started off strong against the Trojans as they poured in 25 points in the opening eight minutes and held Coldspring to only six points on three from both Jacoby Bishop and Ed Levi.

While the Trojans had trouble finding the basket, nine of the 12 players on the Crockett roster recorded at least one point. Lucky Daniels and Derrick Sherman scored four apiece. B.J. Anderson, Tyrese Anderson, Marcus Shedd and Marcus Smith all dropped in three. Travian Duncan and Allen Horace both scored two, while Harvey Stewart added a free throw to round out the Crockett first quarter scoring.

The Trojans found the going a little easier in the second period as they netted 11. Bishop went for six while Jordan Harrell and Tadrean Rucker both added two as Levi converted one of two from the line to close out the point production for Coldspring in the first half.

While the Dawgs’ defense let up a little in the second quarter, their offense continued to rip apart the Trojan defense. Crockett scored 21 in the second period to take a commanding 46-17 lead into the locker room at the half.

Two of the three Dawgs who didn’t score in the first quarter got on the stat sheet as Drew Corry dropped in five while Ahmad Brown powered inside for two. The other Crockett points came from: Daniels with five; T. Anderson with four; Sherman with three; and Smith with two.

After the break, the Trojans finally seemed to find their shooting touch as they scored 18 in the third. Levi led the way with seven while Bishop knocked down six. Josh Curry drained a 3-pointer and Rucker chipped in two for Coldspring.

With the only one player yet to score, the Dawgs made sure starter AJ Owens broke into the scoring column and Owens delivered a two to begin the second half. B.J. Anderson paced the Dawgs in the third quarter with five while T. Anderson dropped in four. A trio of other Crockett players – Duncan, Shedd and Stewart – all added two, while Sherman made one of two from the charity stripe to close out the third with the Dawgs comfortably ahead by a score of 64-35.

The Trojans simply could not make a dent in the Crockett lead and only scored nine points in the final period of play. Bishop dropped in six and Levi had three to close out the scoring for Coldspring.

With all the Dawgs in the scoring column, Coach Kadrian Bryant began to milk the clock and slowed down the high intensity Crockett offense. Daniels put up five points in the quarter while Corry and Shedd dropped in three as B.J. Anderson closed out the game with a two to help give Crockett the 77-44 win.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Jacoby Bishop with 21 points and Ed Levi with 14. Tadrean Rucker posted four, Josh Curry had three and Jordan Harrell added two for Coldspring.

Lucky Daniels led three Crockett players in double figures with 14 while Tyrese Anderson had 11 and B.J. Anderson had 10. Drew Corry, Marcus Shedd and Derrick Sherman all had eight, Marcus Smith netted five, Travian Duncan dropped in four and Harvey Stewart had three. In addition, Ahmad Brown, Allen Horace and A.J. Owens all chipped in two to round out the Crockett scoring.
