Elkhart Elks Out Lift Competition in Malakoff

ELKHART – The Malakoff Texas High School Powerlifting Association Meet was held in Malakoff on Saturday, Jan. 21 and several of the area lifters fared very well in the first meet of 2017. There were 143 lifters from area schools at the event including: Athens; Blooming Grove; Buffalo; Cayuga; Corsicana; Cross Roads; Elkhart; Eustace; Fairfield; Henderson; Kemp; Kerens; Malakoff; Palestine; Rusk; and Westwood.

The team from Elkhart powered their way to first place with a total of 30 points with two first place lifters, two second place and two third place lifters. The meet was scored based on a combination of bench press, dead lift and squat. Seven points were awarded for first place, five points for second three points for third, two points for fourth and one point for fifth.

The results for the other teams in the competition showed: the Kemp Yellow Jackets finished in second place with 22 points; the Buffalo Bison were third with 22; the Palestine Wildcats  were fourth with 19; the Westwood Panthers were fifth with 16 points; the Athens Hornets were sixth with 16; the Rusk Eagles were seventh with 15; the Corsicana Tigers were eighth with 13; the Fairfield Eagles were ninth with 12 points; the Cross Roads Bobcats were 10th with 10 points; the Eustace Bulldogs were 11th with 10 points; the Kerens Bobcats were 12th with seven points; the Malakoff Tigers were 13th with two points; the Cayuga Wildcats were 14th with one point; the Blooming Grove Lions were 15th with one point; and the Henderson Lions were 16th with zero.

Elkhart Elk Jerry Fail finished first in the 114 pound class with a total of 570 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 220 pounds in the squat, 125 on the bench and 225 in the dead lift. Buffalo’s Logan Shaw finished second with a total of 535 pounds lifted, Athens’ Davis Young was third with a total of 475 and Corsicana’s Jason Botkin was fourth with a total of 470 pounds.

In the 123 pound class, Kemp’s Nate Mendoza finished first with a total of 770 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 280 pounds in the squat, 170 on the bench and 320 in the dead lift. Cross Roads’ Bob Hernandez finished second with a total of 765 pounds lifted, Westwood’s Cannon Churchman was third with a total of 740, Malakoff’s Chandler Prnka was fourth with a total of 710 and Palestine’s Javi Zamora was fifth with a total of 665 pounds lifted.

In the 132 pound class, Kemp’s Richard Lowrie finished first with a total of 975 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 400 pounds in the squat, 225 on the bench and 350 in the dead lift. Rusk’s Michael Rosales finished second with a total of 750 pounds lifted, Elkhart’s Cooper Jordan was third with a total of 740 pounds, Corsicana’s Deandre Brown was fourth with a total of 715 and Palestine’s Matthew Thompson was fifth with a total of 700.

In the 148 pound class, Buffalo Bison Ulices Guerrero finished first with a total of 980 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 370 pounds in the squat, 225 on the bench and 385 in the dead lift.Elkhart Elk Demarkus Ray finished second with a total of 970 pounds lifted and Rusk’s Caleb McNair finished third with a total of 935 pounds lifted. Buffalo’s Truman Garza was fourth with a total of 910 and Fairfield’s Timarco Cordon was fifth with 900 pounds.

In the 165 pound class, Westwood’s Zach Morrow finished first with a total of 1060 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 410 pounds in the squat, 240 on the bench and 410 in the dead lift. Cross Roads’ Tyler Johnson was second with a total of 1005 pounds lifted and Fairfield’s Ulices Guerrero was third with a total of 1000. Rusk’s Byron Johnson was fourth was a total of 995 and Palestine’s Tyler Gray was fifth with 975 pounds.

In the 181 pound class, Fairfield’s Jashaugn Hatchom finished first with a total of 1280 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 500 pounds in the squat, 280 on the bench and 500 in the dead lift. Buffalo’s Hector Dominguez was second with a total of 1260 pounds lifted and Elkhart’s Mike Agan was third with a total of 1165. Palestine’s Roderick Deyon was fourth with a total of 1090 and Blooming Grove’s Rusin Goff was fifth with 1020 pounds.

In the 198 pound class, Kemp’s Alan Quezada finished first with a total of 1270 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 500 pounds in the squat, 315 on the bench and 455 in the dead lift. Eustace’s Victor Quevedo finished second with a total of 1225 pounds lifted and Athens’ Maalik Hall was third with a total of 1205. Athens’ Antonio Miranda was fourth was a total of 1160 and Westwood’s Trey Walters was fifth with 1160 pounds.

In the 220 pound class, Athens’ Noah Bush finished first with a total of 1425 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 550 pounds in the squat, 375 on the bench and 500 in the dead lift. Elkhart’s Gavin Defore finished second with a total of 1305 pounds lifted and Palestine’s Edward Reese was third with a total of 1235. Corsicana’s Caleb Johnson was fourth was a total of 1230 and Cayuga’s Brendan Harcrow was fifth with 1225.

In the 242 pound class, Elkhart Elk TJ Jones finished first with a total of 1355 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 540 pounds in the squat, 315 on the bench and 500 in the dead lift. Rusk’s Jermaine Lewis finished second with a total of 250 and Rusk’s Deonundre Hatton finished third with a total of 1240. Corsicana’s Seth White was fourth was a total of 1165 and Fairfield’s La Darius Price was fifth with 1160 pounds.

In the 275 pound class, Kerens’ Eli Crawford finished first with a total of 1485 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 585 pounds in the squat, 330 on the bench and 570 in the dead lift. Westwood’s Malik Benson finished second with a total of 1475 pounds lifted and Buffalo’s Benito Rivas was third with a total of 1345. Corsicana’s Deaunte Thomas was fourth with a total of 1290 and Athens’ Garrett Hayes was fifth with 1285 pounds.

In the super heavyweight class, Palestine’s Jesus Garcia-Castillo finished first with a total of 1475 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 600 pounds in the squat, 350 on the bench and 325 in the dead lift. Eustace’s Michael Marshall was second with a total of 1395 pounds lifted and Corsicana’s Deontae Martin was third with a total of 190. Palestine’s Dejuan Ealy was fourth with a total of 1305 and Kemp’s Joseph Lopez was fifth with a total of 1305.
