HOUSTON COUNTY – And so it begins! The race for the postseason is now underway as all boys’ and girls’ teams have started district play in Houston County.

At the Class 3A level, the Crockett Bulldogs had a bye on Tuesday Jan. 10. On Friday, Jan. 13, the Bulldogs took on the Anderson-Shiro Owls and held them to single digit scoring in every quarter as they won by a final score of 65-26. The Dawgs hosted the Hempstead Bobcats on Tuesday, Jan. 17 but as of press time the score was unavailable.

The Crockett Lady Bulldogs also had a bye last Tuesday before they took on the Anderson-Shiro Lady Owls on Friday. The Lady Dawgs started the weekend off on a positive note as they defeated the Lady Owls by a final score of 55-49.

With their win on Friday, the Dawgs (3-1 in District 21-3A) are in a second place tie with the New Waverly Bulldogs (3-1). The Hempstead Bobcats lead the district with a mark of 4-0.

The Lady Dawgs are in a three way tie for first place in District 21-3A with the New Waverly Lady Bulldogs and the Coldspring-Oakhurst Lady Trojans, all with records of 5-1.  The Dawgs hosted the Hempstead Bobcats on Tuesday, Jan. 17 but as of press time the score was unavailable.

Moving to the 2A level, the boys opened district play on in District 20-2A on Friday night, Jan. 13. The Grapeland Sandies rebounded from a tough, 61-59 loss to Central Pollock on Tuesday, Jan. 10 with a 101-74 win over the Lovelady Lions on Friday. The Sandies hosted the Latexo Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 17 but as of press time the score was unavailable.

The Sandiettes kept rolling along with a 57-19 win over the Groveton Lady Indians on Tuesday, Jan. 10 and followed that up with 47-36 win over the Lovelady Lady Lions on Friday, Jan. 13.

The win keeps the Sandiettes in a first place tie with the Centerville Lady Tigers. Both Grapeland and Centerville have identical marks of 3-0. The Sandiettes hosted the Latexo Lady Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 17 but as of press time the score was unavailable.

The Latexo Tigers were off on Tuesday, Jan. 10 and then hosted the Dallardsville Big Sandy Wildcats on Friday, Jan. 13. The Wildcats showed they still have a little bit of fight from last year’s state semifinalist team and defeated the Tigers by a final of 63-29.

The Lady Tigers lost a heartbreaker on Friday night as they fell to the Big Sandy Lady Wildcats on a last second shot, 52-49 OT. Earlier in the week, Latexo fell to the Lovelady Lady Lions by a final score of 48-28. Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers traveled to Grapeland on Tuesday, Jan. 17, but as of press time the scores were unavailable.

The week started off good for the Lovelady Lions as they defeated the Broaddus Bulldogs by a final score of 70-56. The Lions, unfortunately, ran into a buzz saw to open District 20-2A as the Grapeland Sandies defeated the Lions by a final of 101-74. Lovelady hosted the Centerville Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 17, but as of press time the score was unavailable.

Things were looking positive for the Lady Lions at the start of the week, as well. They defeated the Latexo Lady Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 10 by a score of 48-28. However, they also dropped a game while in Grapeland. The Sandiettes blitzed the Lady Lions in the opening quarter and Lovelady was never able to recover as they lost by a final of 47-36. Lovelady hosted the Centerville Lady Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 17, but as of press time the score was unavailable.

In District 20-2A, the Grapeland Sandies, Centerville Tigers and Big Sandy Wildcats are all 1-0 while the Latexo Tigers, Lovelady Lions and Groveton Indians are 0-1.

On the girls’ side of things, the Grapeland Sandiettes and Centerville Lady Tigers both sit at 3-0, while the Lovelady Lady Lions are 2-1, the Big Sandy Lady Wildcats are 1-2 while both the Groveton Lady Indians and Latexo Lady Tigers are 0-3.

At the Class 1A level, the Kennard Tigers had a good week as they went 2-0. The Tigers defeated the Chester Yellow Jackets by a score of 72-53 on Tuesday, Jan. 10. They followed up the Tuesday night win with a 55-28 victory over the Burkeville Mustangs.

The Lady Tigers also had a good week as they defeated the Chester Lady Yellow Jackets and the Burkeville Lady Mustangs. The Tigers are currently tied with the Wells Pirates for first place in District 28-1A while the Lady Tigers are in third place.
