Lady Bulldogs Suffer First District Loss

NEW WAVERLY – The Crockett Lady Bulldogs were sporting a 2-0 District 21-3A record when they hit the road on Tuesday, Dec. 20 for a basketball game against the New Waverly Lady Bulldogs. New Waverly came into the contest with a record of 1-1 in district play after a loss to the Coldspring-Oakhurst Lady Trojans and a victory over the Trinity Lady Tigers.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs kept the game close but ultimately it was the home Lady Bulldogs who emerged with the 55-47 win.

Crockett opened up the game with cold shooting from the field as they only scored eight points. Katie Holmes and Jada Lockhart both scored two while Dea’Junique James added two.

New Waverly put up 13 points in the first quarter to take a lead they would never lose. Tara Reece scored eight while Sarah Adams, Madison Waller and Amber Walls all scored two to make the score 14-8 after the first eight minutes of play.

James got going for Crockett in the second period as she scored nine of the Lady Bulldogs 11 points while Shelby Corry added the other two.

New Waverly’s Ashlee Drake scored five in the second as Reece had four, while Walls and Audrey Spivey each scored two to make the halftime score 27-19, in favor of New Waverly.

After the break, James continued to lead the way for Crockett with 12 points in the third quarter. Katie Holmes also scored a basket for the Lady Bulldogs in the period.

The Lady Bulldogs in maroon were led by Reece with seven in the quarter while Jordan Lane dropped in a three and three other New Waverly players scored two to make the score 41-33 as the game moved into the fourth quarter.

Crockett, try as they might, was unable to dig out of the hole they found themselves in. James scored six in the quarter while Corry added five and Lockhart netted two.

New Waverly put the game away with 14 points in the final period. Spivey had five, three other Lady Bulldogs had two and one had three to make the final score 55-47 in favor of New Waverly.

Crockett was led by Dea’Junique James with a game high 30 point. Shelby Corry had five while both Katie Holmes and Jada Lockhart had five each.

New Waverly was led by Tara Reece with 18 and Audrey Spivey with 11 points in the game. Sarah Adams and Amber Walls both had six. Ashlee Drake and Jordan Lane both had five while Sydney Walker scored four as New Waverly moved into a second place tie with Crockett in the first round of district play.
