FRANKSTON – Before the season opening varsity kickoffs on Friday, the Junior Varsity (JV) teams were in action on Thursday, Aug. 25

The Westwood JV Panthers hit the road to open their season and traveled to Frankston for a tilt with the JV Indians.

Westwood started the game with possession of the ball at their own 28 yard line and marched 72 yards down the field to score the first TD of the game. The Panthers used 10 plays and scored on a 20 yard run from Caden Barlow. After the score, Westwood went for two and Aeneas Page was able to find the end zone to give the Panthers an early 8-0 lead.

While the Barlow touchdown was the only score in the first 10 minutes, the second quarter saw a veritable scoring explosion.

The Panthers opened the second quarter scoring with a 53 yard touchdown gallop from Barlow and followed up with a second two point conversion from Page. A Frankston fumble, recovered by Westwood’s JT Herndon, led to the Panthers next score as Dalton Brooks found Page on a 61 yard scoring strike. Barlow plowed across the goal line for two and just like that, the Panthers lead was 24-0.

The Indians finally got on the board with a 58 yard bomb but the extra point attempt was no good. The Panthers answered right back as Page broke free for a 40 yard scamper to the end one. Barlow converted the try for two and the half, Westwood led by a score of 32-6.

When the two teams returned from the locker rooms to start the second half, the Panthers defense played lights out and forced a punt. On the punt, Page fielded the ball at his own 30, made a move to juke an Indian defended and took the rock to the house from 70 yards out. The try for two was no good, but Westwood now led 38-6.

The Indians tacked on a late score on a short run to make the final score 38-12 in favor of Westwood.

The JV Panthers will host the Madisonville JV Mustangs next Thursday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
