By Will Johnson Messenger Reporter LOVELADY – The Lovelady Lions came from behind and then held off the Grapeland Sandies to win on Thursday evening by a score of 9-8. The Lovelady victory over Grapeland brought the District 21-2A season to a close for both teams and capped off an unblemished district record for the Lions. It was Senior Night in Lovelady as the Lions honored their graduating seniors in a pregame ceremony. The game was billed as a measuring stick to see where the Sandiettes stood in regard to a Top 10 team in Class 2A and it more than lived up to the expectations. The team had made the playoffs, but youth and inexperience took its toll as the Sandiettes were bounced from the playoffs in the first round. Fast forward a year and Grapeland has had a resurgence in its softball program. The team has gone from fourth place in the district standings to being crowned as district champions. Jesse Lynn Collier, 31, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and cruelty to non-livestock animals / torture after Houston County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 700 block of Nelms Street in Lovelady in reference to a dog being shot.
