CROCKETT – A registered sex offender who failed to notify authorities after relocating from Crockett to Willis has been arrested and charged with a third-degree felony, the Crockett Police Department (CPD) said Monday.
Gregory James Mills, who was convicted of sexual assault in 1985 and according to the statement is currently serving a 99-year paroled sentence for a 1991 attempted capital murder conviction was taken into custody June 24 after investigators confirmed he had moved to Willis without notifying law enforcement as required by law.
The CPD statement explained that during a routine compliance check on June 22, a Crockett police officer visited the residence where Mills was registered and learned from family members that he had recently moved. Investigators later verified Mills had been living in Willis for about three weeks and had also failed to report his presence to the Willis Police Department.
“As a registered sex offender, Mills is required to notify the Crockett Police Department before and after changing addresses, which he failed to do,” the department said in a statement.
Following confirmation of his unauthorized move, Crockett police obtained a warrant for Mills’ arrest for Failure to Comply with Sex Offender Duty to Register Lifetime/Annual — a third-degree felony. Precinct Two Justice of the Peace Ronnie Jordan signed the warrant the same day.
Mills was arrested without incident by the Willis Police Department and initially held at the Montgomery County Jail. He was transferred back to Houston County on June 30. Authorities said the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Parole Division has since issued a parole warrant, and Mills is not eligible for bond.
CPD said it remains committed to ensuring registered sex offenders comply with all legal requirements and encouraged the public to report suspected violations. A searchable database is available at https://sor.dps.texas.gov/Search.
All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
