HOUSTON COUNTY – Mission Tejas State Park is planning a number of events during the month of October, perfect for another trip out to the park or newcomers. Nestled on HWY 21 just south of Weches, the park offers the peace of the Piney Woods, along with East Texas history, spanning generations.

Offering many outdoor activities, the park sits on the historic El Camino Real, the Spanish royal road, which ran from Mexico to Louisiana in the late 1600’s. The park is also home to several historic sites, such as settlements from the Caddo tribe, French settlers and early American pioneers.

The fun will start Saturday, Oct. 5, with “Fishing with a New Angle”, a fishing and presentation about pond wildlife, beginning at 9 a.m.

“Night Sense”, a ranger-led night hike will feature nocturnal wildlife activities, running from 6:45 p.m.-8:45 p.m.

The official El Camino Real Celebration is set for Oct. 19, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The Messenger will have full coverage of this important event, marking pioneer life and some of our Houston County history.

Halloween is also on deck at Mission Tejas, with a history hike Saturday, Oct. 26, from 2-3:30 p.m., before the “Fall Trees and Tall Tales”, from 5:30-7 p.m. The evening event will feature ranger-led spooky stories and a night hike.

Mission Tejas is located at 19343 State Highway 21 East in Grapeland. For more information, contact the park at (936) 687-2394.
