CROCKETT – Piney Woods Fine Arts Association (PWFAA) will begin this year’s exciting season of performances this Friday, Sept. 13, with Texas legend and multi Grammy nominee Ruthie Foster. The kickoff show is set for 7:30 p.m., with tickets still available.
Foster is promoting her tenth album, after a lengthy career as one of the new trendsetters in Texas music. Describing herself as “a little black girl with guitar,” that humble nickname hides a lifetime of talent and achievement, blending several styles of music into her unique sound.
Foster mixes a wide palette of American song forms, from gospel and blues to jazz, folk and soul.
She has often been compared to Bonnie Raitt and Aretha Franklin.Foster has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards for Best Blues Album and Best Contemporary Blues Album.
Hailing from the little town of Gause, Foster would later live in Waco, growing up in a musical family, beginning her singing career in rural Texas churches. A veteran, Foster sang in the Naval band “Pride,” before being offered a big-time recording contract in New York. Not wishing to be a pop star, Foster opted to continue her unique mix of blues and folk music, before returning to College Station to take care of her mother, ill at the time.
Several of Foster’s albums have been nominated for Grammy awards, and her newest album looks poised to become another classic, as Foster hasn’t lost her pace – or her unique sound.
In 2009, Foster was inducted in the Texas Music Hall of Fame.
Her unique sound, forged over many years and dripping with Texas heart, seems a fitting beginning to anther season from PWFAA, which is still accepting season ticket purchases and sponsors to support the shows.
