PALESTINE – As the nation prepared to celebrate its 246th birthday and freedom from oppression on Monday, an inmate at the Anderson County Jail extended his loss of freedom on Sunday, July 3.

According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 11:40 am, jail staff and medical personnel were attending to an inmate medical request when they were confronted by another inmate, Davon Reginald Calhoun (28) of Palestine.

“Calhoun threatened and interfered with the Sheriff’s personnel as they attempted to care for the other inmate. Jail staff attempted to move Calhoun and he resisted aggressively. Calhoun kicked one female staff member in the face, struck a male staff member twice in the face, and bit the male staffer twice on the arm. After he was restrained, Calhoun threatened to kill the jail staffs’ children and burn down their homes,” a statement on the ACSO Facebook page reported.

Calhoun was originally in custody on an Assault/Family Violence charge. Following the above referenced incident, Calhoun was charged with: Assaulting a Public Servant (third-degree felony); Harassment of a Public Servant (third-degree felony); Obstruction or Retaliation (third-degree felony); and Terroristic Threat of a Public Servant (third-degree felony).  Bond has not been set yet on the additional charges.

According to Section 12.34 of the Texas Penal Code, “An individual adjudged guilty of a felony of the third degree shall be punished by imprisonment in the institutional division for any term of not more than 10 years or less than two years. In addition to imprisonment, an individual adjudged guilty of a felony of the third degree may be punished by a fine not to exceed $10,000.”
