Lady Mustangs Hold off Lady Tigers, 49-34

SLOCUM – It’s tournament time in the basketball world and a pretty good one is going on over in Slocum. Competing in the tournament on the boys’ side of things is: Buffalo; Chilton; Eustace; Alto; Marshall, Calif.; Leon; Frankston; Kennard; New Summerfield; Neches; Iola; and Slocum.

For the girls’, there were six teams: Alto; Neches; Jacksonville JV; Slocum; Kennard; and Woden.

In the final girls’ game of the night on Thursday, Dec. 5, the Slocum Lady Mustangs hosted the Kennard Lady Tigers. The Lady Mustangs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they held off the Lady Tigers by a final score of 49-34.

As the game got underway, Marlee Lasiter opened up on fire as she canned nine of Slocum’s 16 first quarter points. Brooke Sims had five and Libby Kessel dropped in two.

The Lady Tigers’ first quarter points came from Katelynn McDaniel with 6.

Brooke Sims paced Slocum with a pair of threes in the second quarter while Aby Taylor had four and Kessel chipped in two as the Lady Mustangs opened up a 29-14 lead at the break.

Averie Elizado led the way for Kennard in the second period with six points while McDaniel dropped in two.

When the two teams came out of the locker room after halftime, they played even as both teams put up 10 points in the third and fourth quarters. Sims knocked down her fourth 3-pointer of the game for Slocum in the third while Kessel added three more to her total. Lasiter and Calli Sloan also had two.

Kennard’s third quarter points came from Karissa Lumbreraz with five, McDaniel with four and Portia Pope with one.

The fourth quarter also saw the two teams play to a draw, even though the Lady Tigers managed to trim the Slocum lead to nine early in the period.

Pope and McDaniel both had four while Caitlyn Pyle knocked down a pair of free throws to close out the Lady Tigers scoring.

Kessel and Bella McNeill led the way for Slocum with four, fourth quarter points apiece while Lasiter added two as the Lady Mustangs won by a margin of 49-34.

On the game, Katelyn McDaniel scored a game-high 16 points for the Kennard Lady Tigers. Averie Elizado dropped in six while both Karissa Lumbreraz and Portia Pope netted five. Caitlyn Pyle added a pair of free throws to close out the Kennard scoring.

Slocum was paced by Marlee Lasiter and Brooke Sims with 14 points apiece. Libby Kessel poured in 11 while Bella McNeill and Abby Taylor each had four. Calli Sloan also chipped in two for the lady Mustangs.
