GRAPELAND – On a mild Thursday Dec. 5 night, the Christmas Spirit revved up in Grapeland as the Grapeland Chamber of Commerce hosted Christmas on Main Street.

The streets were lined with decorations as Grapeland City workers had recently hung the Christmas ornaments along Main Street on one side of the road while Tom and Vickie Gates had once again provided the city with a dazzling display of Christmas lights on the other side.

Visitors to the festive event were greeted by several local organizations who were serving a bountiful feast. Best Friends Community Services, Grapeland State Bank, Prosperity Bank and the Grapeland Noon Lions Club were all on hand to ring in the Christmas Season and serve their delicacies.

Also on hand for Christmas on Main Street was local artist Bobby Hallmark who was providing free sketches to those who sat for a portrait. The event also featured music from the band, “Crockett State of Mind.”

The highlight of the evening was the arrival of Santa Claus who gave his reindeer a night off and rolled into town on the back of a Grapeland Fire Department tuck.

Once Santa disembarked from his “sled,” he greeted the boys and girls who came out to see the Jolly Old Elf.

Santa set up shop in the community room of Grapeland State Bank and invited all the children to come up, one-at-a time to tell him their Christmas wishes. Even some adults sat on Santa’s lap, hoping St. Nick would find them on his nice list.

The Christmas Spirit filled the air as the chamber put on a wonderful event that keeps growing year-after-year. This year’s crowd was estimated to be well over 200 and the hope is next year’s event will be even bigger.

From all of us at The Messenger, here’s wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
