BURKEVILLE – The Lovelady Lions hit the road on Thursday, Sept. 26 for their District 12-2A DII opener against the Burkeville Mustangs.
Not too far away from Burkeville is Ft. Polk, located just over the Louisiana border where wild mustangs still roam free. Unfortunately for Burkeville, none of these horses have migrated to Texas and the Lions found that out quickly as they feasted on the Mustangs by a final score of 59-22.
The Lions were coming off their first win of the season as they defeated the Leon Cougars 51-30 to give them a 1-3 record on the season.
The Mustangs, on the other hand, were also 1-3 with their lone victory coming against the San Augustine JV. They were dominated in two of their losses and forfeited another to Mt. Enterprise.
Lovelady’s offense got it going early in the game and opened up a 44-6 halftime lead. After the half Lovelady Head Coach Will KIrchoff began to substitute liberally as the Lions rolled to the 59-22 win.
The win moves Lovelady to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in district play.
The road doesn’t get any easier for the Mustangs as they travel to Grapeland next Friday to take on the #5 ranked Sandies on Friday, Oct. 4.
The Lions return home next week for their Homecoming game against the 1-2 Colmesneil Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
