GRAPELAND – Even though we’re smack dab in the middle of July, with the hottest part of the summer still to come, it’s not too early to start thinking about mid-October, cooler temperatures and the 2019 Peanut Festival.

This year marks the 74th anniversary of the annual event and the theme this year is “Autumn in Texas.” The official start of the festival is Thursday Oct. 17 and the festivities culminate with the crowning of the 2019 Peanut Queen.

Speaking of the Queen’s coronation, the Grapeland Chamber of Commerce and Peanut Queen Coronation Director, Tammy Hassell are encouraging Grapeland Senior High School young ladies to participate in this 74th annual upcoming event.

In this year’s show, the queen contestants will present a group activity, public speaking, talent and evening ware.

Prior to the coronation, the contestants will enjoy:

  • A mother/daughter kick-off brunch.
  • A group training session for social and business etiquette, as well as interview skills.
  • A group outing, including lunch and a workplace tour which will be announced closer to the competition.
  • An opportunity to volunteer in your community for three hours of service.
  • A photo shoot with Studio 15.
  • A fashion-in-the-workplace consultation.
  • An opportunity to compete for scholarships.

“The Chamber of Commerce is encouraging those willing to help maintain this long-standing tradition to secure a business sponsor, as well as to obtain your three required, volunteer hours in the community as soon as possible. Please call or text 903-513-4938 if you would like more information. Sign up deadline is August 30th, either through the Grapeland High School office or with Mrs. Tammy,” Hassell said.

Claiming a float theme is on a first come first serve basis – and with this year’s theme of “Autumn in Texas,” participants are encouraged to contact the Coronation Director to secure your chosen sub-theme.

This event is also open to home-schoolers within GISD school district.
