Dates and Positions to Remember

EAST TEXAS – It seems like the 2018 election cycle just ended but here we are again as the 2019 election cycle kicks off.

As we begin the process of determining who will be elected to the local school board, city council or special purpose district, there are several important dates to keep in mind.

The first day to apply for a ballot by mail was Jan. 1 and the last day is April 23.

The first day for candidates to file for a place on the General Election Ballot is Jan. 16 while the last day to file is Feb. 15 at 5 p.m.

The last day to order a General Election or Election on a Measure is Feb. 15.

The last day to register to vote is April 4 while the first day of early voting is April 22. The final day of early voting is April 30.

The General Election will be held on Saturday, May 4.

Several political bodies have seats up for grabs this year. The Houston County Hospital District will have five positions on this year’s ballot as Positions 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are open.

In the city of Crockett, the mayoral position is up for election as well as positions 1 and 2. Also on the May ballot will be a measure to determine the fate of the Crockett Economic and Industrial Development Corporation.

At Crockett ISD, Positions 6 and 1 are up for election.

In the city of Grapeland, there will be three at-large positions on the ballot. Grapeland ISD will have four positions on the ballot with positions 6 and 7 as three-year terms, position 1 as a one-year term and position 4 as a two-year term.

Kennard will see a mayoral election on the May ballot as well as elections for positions 1 and 2. Kennard ISD will have three at-large positions available. Two of these at-large positions are for three-year terms while the third is for a one-year term.

Moving to Latexo, positions 5, 6 and 7 will appear on the ballot. Information on the Latexo city elections was not available as of press time.

In the city of Lovelady, positons 3, 4 and 5 will have a spot on the ballot while at Lovelady ISD, positions 4 and 5 are up for election.

The city of Elkhart will have the mayoral seat along with council positions 2 and 4 on the May ballot. At Elkhart ISD, positions 1, 2 and 3 will be on the ballot.

In the Palestine ISD, places 3, 4 and 5 are slated for the May ballot, while the city of Palestine is scheduled to hold elections for the mayoral position along with council districts 2, 4 and 6.
