Arnold Winkler

Arnold Winkler, husband to Edna Winkler, son of James and Francis Winkler, born on October 12, 1936, in Hamilton County Ohio, passed away on Thursday October 25, 2018 at St. David’s Hospital in Austin, TX. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by friends and family. Not long before he left this world, he told his family and physicians that it was time to go be with his Heavenly Father.

Arnold retired from the United States Army after honorably serving his country for 20 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. During his military career, Arnold served in the Panama Canal Zone as a jungle warfare expert. He also completed three separate tours in the Vietnam War. During his time in Vietnam, Arnold was awarded Two Silver Stars with clusters, as well as several Presidential Commendations.

After retiring from the Army in 1971, Arnold began a career in the Security Division of Texas Instruments where he quickly rose to a position of leadership. It was during this time that he met his wife Edna Graham Winkler, who also worked for the company. They were married in November 1978. In 1983, Arnold moved the family to Grapeland, TX to be near Edna’s family. Arnold worked for a time at the State School in Crockett, TX. He then worked many years, until his retirement, for the Walmart Distribution Center in Palestine, TX.

Arnold’s great joy in life was serving the Lord. He and Edna were members of the Latexo Baptist Church where they were very active. In addition, they enjoyed travelling through the United States completing missionary work. Arnold served for a time as the Treasurer for the East Texas Baptist Missionary Board and was a member of the Neches River Baptist Association. He and Edna were also long time volunteers at the Open Door Mission in Crockett, TX.

Arnold Winkler was a simple man that believed in God, honor, Duty and responsibility. He loved three things; God, his family, and sweet desserts. He is survived by his wife, Edna Winkler; sisters, Mary Mays and Edna Gilkerson; sons, Fred Winkler, Johnny Stokes, Ricky Stokes and Jimmy Stokes; daughters, Laureen Shane, Cathy Russell, Vicky Dickehut, Julie Palmer; grandchildren, Stefan Winkler, Dena Winkler, Elliot Winkler, Gregory Stokes, Jonathan Miles, Marla Rabago, Terry Dewey, Daniel Bentley, Justin Fugate, John-Paul Fugate, Michael Frey, Ryan Frye , Lena Stokes; and 16 great-grandchildren.
