THE WEEKENDER by Clyde Black: County Elections in 2018

Wow!  Things are heating up in Houston County politics!  Our next significant election will be next year, 2018, but candidates are required to file now if they intend to run for any of those positions.  The deadline was this past Monday.

My position, JP Pct. 1, is one of those up of reelection and I have filed to hopefully serve another term.  In advance, thanks for you vote!  It looks like I may have an opponent and other contested offices seem to be County Judge, County Treasurer, County Clerk, District Clerk and one of the Commissioner’s jobs.

There is no doubt that this will be an interesting election cycle and all of these positions are important.

I hope that voters will spend some time to get to know the candidates and find someone to support.  I have had the great pleasure and honor to have been elected three times.  The term for JP is 4 years.

So, I have been JP in Pct. 1 for 11 years now and will serve at least one more and hopefully 4 more years if reelected.  I will tell you right now that if reelected, it will be my last term and I will resign.  Time for some new blood.

Those statement lead up to a conversation about term limits.  A subject my friend Horace McQueen has often discussed and supported.  I firmly support term limits for everyone but me!  (A little humor there).  Seriously, I do support term limits as we have some Senators and Representatives who can’t remember their name.

I’m a Republican but poor old John McCain really needs to retire as does Democrat Nancy Pelosi.  I doubt if either of them has had an original thought in years.  Robots!

Folks, have some fun and get involved!  It’s your home and your county.  Join a party and participate and get answers to those question you have about why this or that happens.  During this Christmas season let’s fight for the right to be able to say Merry Christmas and thank the Lord for his Son.  God Bless Houston County.
