Sandiettes Take Down Lady Owls

Big Third Quarter Propels Grapeland to 63-43 Win

 GRAPELND – After a weekend of tournament action in Chapel Hill, the Grapeland Sandiettes returned home to face the Chireno Lady Owls.

The game was sloppy throughout, as turnovers plagued both teams, however, a big third quarter from the Sandiettes allowed the home team to pull away and win the contest by a final score of 63-43.

As the first quarter got underway, both teams struggled from the field. The Sandiettes only managed to put up nine points in the period on a three from Ragan Bowie and twos from Hannah Chipman, Teira Jones and Kenya Woods.

With the Sandiettes struggling to find their range, the Lady Owls took an early 12-9 lead after the first eight minutes of play. Naomi Vargas dropped in six, Brooke Elliott had four and Summer Murray added two.

The Chireno lead was short-lived as Grapeland upped its defensive intensity in the second quarter. The Sandiettes held the Lady Owls to seven points in the period while they dropped 15 on their guests to take a 24-19 lead at the break.

The Lady Owls’ points came on three from Elliott and two points apiece from Jaleigh Johnson and Vargas.

The Sandiettes were led by Jones with seven points and Kenya Woods with four. KeKe Harris got on the books with a two and was joined by Bowie who also had two.

After the break, Grapeland kept up the pressure on the defensive end and while Chireno managed to score 15 in the quarter, the Sandiette “D” forced numerous turnovers which resulted in 26 points for the home team.

Briana Rushing had seven points for the Lady Owls while Elliott, Johnson, Vargas and Kirsten Shaw all had two.

Chipman and Jones both dropped in seven to lead the Sandiettes in the third, while Harris added six. Bowie hit a three, Deana McKnight had two and Woods made one of two from the line to give Grapeland a 50-34 lead with one quarter left to play.

Try as they might, the Lady Owls were unable to cut into the Grapeland lead. Elliott had five in the final eight minutes and was joined in the scoring column by Vargas and Emily Bennett with two apiece to close out the Chireno scoring.

For the Sandiettes, Jones dominated the final period of play with nine points. She was joined by Chipman and Reagan Bishop with two each as Grapeland pulled away to win the game by a final score of 63-43.

On the game, Chireno was led by Brooke Elliott with 14 and Naomi Vargas with 12 points. Briana Rushing had seven, Jaleigh Johnson had four while Emily Bennett, Summer Murray and Kirsten Shaw all had two.

Grapeland was led by Teira Jones with 25 and Hannah Chipman with 11 points. Ragan Bowie and KeKe Harris both scored eight while Kenya Woods added seven. Reagan Bishop and Deana McKnight rounded out the scoring for the Sandiettes with two apiece.
