“1 Corinthians 11 – “Proper Participation in Communion”

Another sin which the wealthier Corinthian Christians were committing at church was starting the communion meal quickly and eating and drinking (alcoholic wine) and getting full and drunk before the poorer folks (most likely slaves) arrived.

This was wrong and many of these gluttonous believers were dying or getting sick.

The Apostle Paul advises that these wealthier believers eat at home first, if they are that hungry.

Then Paul exhorts all of the believers to examine themselves before participating in the Communion to be sue all of their sins were confessed.  Our pastor would always give the congregation time to confess any known sin before partaking of the Lord’s Supper.

He would warn us that if we ate or drank with known sin in our lives, unconfessed, we were opening ourselves up to the discipline of the Lord.
