Sunday Afternoon Shootout in Crockett

CROCKETT – It was anything but a typical Sunday afternoon in Crockett as four individuals – in two separate vehicles – engaged in a shoot-out near the Davy Crockett Park area. Thankfully, no one was injured but 37 charges were filed on the four individuals due to the incident.

According to a Crockett Police Department press release, officers received a report from a motorist who advised CPD dispatch the vehicle she and her husband were riding in was being chased by another vehicle and shots had been fired at them.

The call was received at approximately 4:30 p.m. on March 12 and came from a female identified as 30-year-old Hope Calvin, from Crockett, the press release indicated.

Calvin reported she and her husband, 25-year-old Christopher Calvin, were traveling near the Davy Crockett Park Area in a 2006 Chrysler 300 with their two children when they noticed they were being followed by a 2014 Honda Accord and shots were fired, the press release indicated.

While she was still on the phone with the police dispatcher, the Calvin’s managed to pull into the Houston County Sheriff’s Office parking lot where they were met by law enforcement officials.

Honda Accord, driven by Gizel Hernandez, (35 from Lufkin) with Ravion Bogan (27 from Lufkin) in the passenger seat, was also stopped by law enforcement, the press release stated.

“This was a very dangerous situation for all parties involved especially the two children that were in the back seat of the vehicle that was shot by the pursuing vehicle narrowly missing the two children in the back seat,” Crockett Police Chief David “Buddy” Cross said.

As the investigation unfolded, the CPD media statement indicated “… officers discovered firearms and illegal narcotics in both vehicles. Christopher Calvin was checked for warrants and he had 3 outstanding warrants for his arrest.”

In addition, investigators recovered two firearms which had previously been reported as stolen.

During the course of investigation, law enforcement officials were able to determine shots had been fired from both vehicles at each other while they were traveling in the area of Davy Crockett Park, the press release stated.

As the four suspects were questioned, it was learned that Hernandez and Bogan came to Crockett, looking for Christopher Calvin and when they found him driving his vehicle, they began to follow him, the press release reported.

“While traveling down various streets in the city near Davy Crockett Park, shots were fired from both vehicles. Officers were able to locate a witness who observed the incident and gave investigators a statement about what they saw,” the release stated.

ildren were seated – the statement indicated – and approximately 31 grams of methamphetamine was located in Hernandez’s vehicle, along with various types of illegal prescription medication.

“The CPD patrol officers and detectives did a great job of collecting evidence, finding witnesses and interviewing all parties that led to the arrest of the four adults on a total of 37charges. They worked several hours on the investigation to determine exactly what had transpired,” Cross said.

The police chief also expressed his appreciation to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office deputies for their assistance in the arrests and to Child Protective Services for their quick response to aid with the endangered children.

A total of 37 total charges were filed on the four individuals from the two vehicles.
