12-15 FORESTRY UPDATE by Gary Allen Burns

Deer population surveys provide the deer managers with data to analyze to help make herd management decisions. The collected data provides information on deer density (such as acres per deer and acres per adult deer), doe:buck ratio, fawn:doe ratio, herd composition, etc. The management objectives will then influence the harvest quota by sex. Many deer managers try to move towards a doe:buck ratio of 1:1 with a 2:1 ratio considered acceptable.
