Charles Winston Spence, Sr.

Charles Winston Spence, Sr., age 79, passed away on Saturday, October 15th, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. Born July 25, 1937 in Grapeland, TX to William W. and Audrey M. Lakey Spence. He worked the family farm until he joined the U.S. Army to serve his country. This dedication to his country was his first career, where he retired after 22 years as a Sergeant First Class and two tours in Vietnam.

Upon his retirement his second career was working for the State of Texas in the penitentiary system, until he retired for the second time.

The passions and joys in his life were fishing on the lakes and hunting in the woods of Texas. He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed canning “the fruits and vegetables” of his labor.

He was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife Barbara Spence. He is survived by his children Connie (Rick) Turner of Glenwood Springs, CO, Charlie (Connie) Spence of Concord, TX, Tina (Dale) Abbott of Glenwood Springs, CO, and Recha (Al) Stephens of Alvin, TX. His sisters Shirley Morgan and Ellen Smith and numerous nieces and nephews, 3 grandchildren (Ceann, Charlcee, and Jimbo), and one great granddaughter (Harper)

Military services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 22nd at Grapeland City Cemetery.
