CROCKETT — Two men have been charged in connection with the June shooting at a Crockett block party that left four people with gunshot wounds, the Crockett Police Department (CPD) announced Friday, Sept. 25.
Investigators now say one of the four people shot was an intended target. The other three were bystanders. Some of the victims are still recovering, according to the department.
The shooting happened at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday, June 13, in the 1100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where a large gathering was underway. Officers, sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and emergency medical personnel responded to reports of shots fired. Two other people were injured when struck by vehicles during the incident, according to the initial police account.
Police identified the two men arrested in connection with the shooting as Dakenyon D’wayne Davis, 26, and Lynndelverick Concepcion Malone, 21, both from the Nacogdoches area.
According to CPD, the men had traveled to Crockett with a group from the San Augustine area. A separate group from the Center area was also at the event. Investigators said the groups had issues with one another before that night and allege that the group with Davis and Malone fired toward the group from Center.
Davis was taken into custody in Angelina County on July 3 by the United States Marshals Service and the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office. At the time, he was wanted on separate warrants from San Augustine County for aggravated assault and Nacogdoches County for possession of marijuana, police said.
Officers found Davis in possession of several firearms during that arrest, according to CPD. He was also charged with theft of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Davis has since been transferred to the San Augustine County Jail and charged in connection with the Crockett shooting with three counts of aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
Malone was arrested Thursday, Sept. 24, in Nacogdoches on a San Augustine County warrant for theft of a firearm. He has now also been charged with one count of aggravated assault in connection with the Crockett shooting, CPD said.
The department said detectives conducted numerous interviews and worked with other law enforcement agencies, using ballistic evidence and investigative technology to develop the case. Despite the size of the gathering, police said relatively few people came forward with information.
“Although hundreds of people were present in the area when the shooting occurred, only a limited number of individuals came forward and provided valuable information to investigators,” CPD said in its update.
The department credited those witnesses and the detectives who continued working the case.
Davis and Malone are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
