Jo Ann Matthews Gray

Jo Ann Matthews Gray, age 83, of Crockett passed away Monday, June 30, 2025 in Conroe. Jo Ann was born April 26, 1942 in Cleveland to parents, John William Matthews, Sr. and Eunice Rae Campbell Matthews. Right after high school she worked as a bank cashier in Houston, and then at the Crockett State Bank. Jo Ann worked in banking for over 40 years, retiring from Citizen’s National Bank as the Vice President. She was a member of the Ephesus Baptist Church in Grapeland.

Jo Ann is survived by sisters, Jimmie Ruth Matthews Ramirez of Crockett, Mary Matthews of Grapeland; brother, John William Matthews, Jr. of Grapeland; step-daughter, Vicki Ann Payne of Conroe; step-son, Hugh Hix Gray, Jr. of Alvin; granddaughter, Karen Ann Morrisey of Conroe; great-grandchildren, Joey Tucker and David Morrisey; niece, Cindy Poe of Houston; nephews, Dwayne Poe of Beaumont, Cliffton Poe and wife, Nadia of Warren, James Poe of Lumberton; numerous other loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by husband, Hughie Hix Gray, Sr.; parents, John and Eunice Matthews; brother, Cecil Ray Poe.

A memorial service for Jo Ann Matthews Gray will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2025 at the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ephesus Baptist Church in Grapeland.
