LOVELADY – The Lovelady Lions were hungry. They were 0-3 on the season and were looking to pick up their first win of the season as they welcomed the Leon Cougars to the Lions’ Den in Lovelady.

The Cougars were also looking to pick up their first win of the season as they came into the contest 0-3. The ground-and-pound attack of Leon that had worked well for so many years was no longer visible when they took the field.

In fact, it was just the opposite as the Lions unleashed their own ground-and-pound attack and demolished the Cougars, 51-30 as they picked up their first win of the season and sent Leon back to Jewett with a 0-4 record.

The Cougars simply could not stop Josh Martinez as he opened the scoring with an 18-yard TD run. After the two teams exchanged possessions, a pick-six tied the game in the waning minutes of the first quarter.

The Lions answered back as Martinez broke free for a 49-yard score, aided by a key downfield block from Nick Ochoa, to give Lovelady a 14-8 lead after the first quarter.

Following a Leon score, Martinez broke free on another long run to set the Lions up at the Cougars’ three-yard-line. From there, Logan LeBlanc bulled his way over to extend the Lovelady lead.

The Cougars kept the game close but Sean Easterling added a two-yard TD to give the Lions a 28-24 lead as the two teams headed into the locker room at the half.

After the break, it was all Lovelady. Lions’ QB Seth Murray connected with LeBlanc to pad the lead and Martinez added another touchdown to help propel the Lions to a 51-30 win over the Leon Cougars.

Lovelady hits the road this Thursday, Sept. 26 as they open district play against the 0-3 Burkeville Mustangs in Burkeville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
