J. D. “Johnnie” Dancer

J. D. “Johnnie” Dancer, age 95, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2018 at his residence.  He was born February 6, 1923 in Elkhart, Tx to parents, James Woodard Dancer and Gurtrude Honeycutt Dancer.  Johnnie was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army.  He was a wonderful husband, dad and papaw, just a sweetheart of a man and a heart as Big as Texas living his life as an auto mechanic, builder, contractor and general contractor. He formerly worked for Parks and Recreation as Carpenter Superintendent and upon retirement City of Houston, he built a house in Crockett where he and Elma Lea Dancer lived.  Johnnie continued to work, building 52 houses in Crockett and Houston County.

Johnnie is survived by children, J. D. “Dwayne” Dancer and wife, Connie of Crockett, Patricia Dancer Frizzell, Verna Murphy and husband, Mike of Katy; sister, Della Dancer Campbell; grandchildren, Georgia Lynn, Suzanne Jeanette, Charlene, Michael Ray, James Dancer, Janet, Danny Mack; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Caleb, Shelby, Bailey, Karlea, Beau; great-great-grandchildren, Memphis Alan Cook; life-long friend, Dorothy Harris of Crockett; special cousin, Doug Honeycutt; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elma Lea Stowe Dancer; second wife, Doris Carter Nichols Dancer; parents, James Woodard Dancer and Gurtrude Honeycutt Dancer; brothers, Ed Dancer, Luke Dancer and Joe Dancer; boyhood friends, Gene and Doug Harrison; sister, Audrey Dancer Campbell.

Funeral services for J. D. “Johnnie” Dancer was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2018 in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Dr. Bill Jones officiating.  Interment will follow in the Whitehead Cemetery.  Family received friends for visitation Monday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
