HORACE MCQUEEN: Asking Questions — Getting Few Answers

Well, it’s time to regroup for Super Bowl 2018.  The Texans and their $72 million dollar quarterback couldn’t get the job done and the Cowboys were frozen out by Green Bay.  Both games were nail-biters, to the bitter end. As the folks down at Texas A & M always say “wait till next year”.

Noticed a newspaper ad that featured “grass fed, boneless, rib eye steak” at the special price of $15.99 a pound. Mercy me! Most East Texas cattle are “grass fed” but never imagined that this beef was worth over $15 a pound. I thought about calling the grocery chain beef buyer and offering our whole herd — cows, calves and bulls — for only $3 a pound. Reckon that would be an offer they would take?

Got your Super Bowl Tickets? At starting prices of $4,000 to 6,000 each in the “nose bleed section” it must take a real fan to pay those prices. Just stay home and watch the game on television. Or if you want a real thrill, if you can call it that, forget the big game and visit with Johnny Manziel—at a price of course. Manziel, who has fallen from grace and lost his NFL cachet, will be offering selfies at two Houston malls for only $50 apiece. And if his few fans want more, Manziel will sign an item for $99. Or, for $129, he will write up to four words .What a deal!

Dr. Joe Masabni, Texas A & M Extension vegetable expert at the Overton Center has come up with a potential new money-maker for farmers.

Masabni says his research into growing ginger shows promise. Ginger is a tropical, perennial crop that is propagated from root cuttings. It can be grown under a tree canopy or under filtered sun in a high tunnel or below shade cloth.

For each pound of ginger root planted, Masabni harvested sixteen pounds of product. On commercial farms he reports a yield of 30,000 pounds of ginger an acre, selling for $1.60 a pound.

The Clintonites will never admit defeat in the Presidential race. John Lewis, a Congressman from Atlanta, Georgia, has added his racist comments about winner Donald Trump. Lewis says Trump will not be a “legitimate” President. Along with over two dozen other dissident members of Congress, he will boycott the Presidential Inauguration. Again, losers all!
