Weekly Bible Commentary by Wes Woodard – Daniel 2 – “God is Sovereign Over the Affairs of Men”

King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that greatly troubled him. But, when he awoke he could not remember the dream, so he called his wisemen to tell him the dream and its interpretation. They told him that no wiseman on the earth could tell him his dream, but if he would tell them the dream they would interpret it for him. But, he could not remember the dream. He became very angry and ordered all the wisemen of Babylon killed! A servant went to Daniel and t0ld him this dilemma. Daniel requested more time from the king. He and his three friends went to their God, the God of Israel (and our God) in prayer for deliverance. God answered and gave Daniel the king’s dream. Daniel told the king that he saw a great statue. The head of the statue was made of fine gold. The breast and arms were made of silver. The belly and thighs were made of bronze, the legs were made of iron, and the feet were made of part clay and iron. A great stone cut out without hands struck the statue on the feet. The entire statue collapsed and the wind blew it away. Then the same stone became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. Daniel told the king that he was the head of gold and there would arise other kingdoms that would be inferior to his. The very last kingdom would be God’s and it would endure forever. The king was amazed and fell on his face and did homage to Daniel, and gave orders to give him gifts. The king said, “Surely your God is a God of Gods and a Lord of Kings, and a revealer of mysteries.” (verse 47) Daniel was then promoted to be the head or chief of all the wisemen, and his three friends were promoted as well.
