Sandiettes Claim State Championship in Golf

Boyd Finishes Fourth, Chipman Fifth

AUSTIN – The Grapeland Sandiettes Golf Team has staked its claim as Class AA State Champions in golf after they shot a combined 689 to best runner-up Normangee by 25 strokes and third place finisher Vega by 26.

After finishing in sixth place last year as a team, the Sandiettes were on a mission and started off the tournament on fire.

The Sandiettes finished day one of the competition with a total of 345, which put them 16 strokes ahead of the Vega Lady Longhorns and 21 strokes ahead of the Normangee Lady Panthers.

Day two saw Grapeland shave a stroke from their day one score as they finished with a 344. Their two-day total was 25 strokes lower than second place finisher Normangee and 26 strokes better than third place finisher Vega.

On the individual front, Cheney Boyd finished in fourth place with a two-day total of 160. Boyd shot an 81 on the first day of play at the Roy Kizer Golf Course and then dropped two strokes on the second day to finish with a 79, nine strokes behind the leaders

Christoval Lady Cougar Taylor Tomlinson finished in first place with a two day total of 151 after she beat Forsan Lady Buffalo Jillian Jones in a playoff.

Vega Lady Longhorn Allie Joyce was third with a 157, just three strokes ahead of Boyd.

Just behind Boyd was her teammate Hannah Chipman who finished in a fifth place tie with a 162. Chipman shot a 78 on the first day and then carded an 84 on day two.

Grapeland’s Carly Parker finished 18th with a two day total of 183 (90-93) while Mary Jane Watson finished 25th with a 189. Watson shaved 13 strokes off of her day one score of 101 to finish day two with an 88. Madelyn Conner rounded out the Grapeland team with a two day score of 198 (96-102).

Lovelady Lady Lion Danielle Turner finished tied with Chipman for fifth place with a 162 (82-80).

The Latexo Lady Tigers finished in eight place as a team with a two day total of 811. The Lady Tigers shot a combined 418 on day one and then dropped 25 strokes on day two to finish with a 393.

Jordan Davenport shot a two-day total of 186 (98-88). Maggie Gibbons recorded a 221 (114-107), Baylee Granberry carded a 205 (101-104). Kelsey Patterson shot a 200 (106-94) and Tori Woodford had a 229 (113-116).
