GRAPELAND – The Grapeland Sandies were fresh off their most difficult test in District 20-2A competition when they welcomed the Groveton Indians to Grapeland on Friday night, Jan. 27.

The Sandies had defeated the Big Sandy Wildcats on earlier in the week by a score of 65-49 and up through Tuesday’s game, had averaged a 33 point margin of victory so far in district competition. The Sandies upped that average, somewhat, following their 48 point beat down of the Groveton Indians on Friday night.

The Sandies defense was on display early in the game as they held the Indians to four points in the opening eight minutes on baskets from Trelin Farr and Leon Johnson.

Offensively, Grapeland opened up a 15 point advantage and never looked back. Tink McQuirter led the way with eight first quarter points. He was joined by Case Boyd, Rodney Davis and Parker Wilson who all connected from 3-point land. Davis also brought the crowd to its feet with a spectacular dunk as the quarter came to an end with the Sandies ahead by a score of 19-4.

As the second quarter got underway, the Grapeland defense kept up the pressure and limited Groveton to eight points in the period. Johnson dropped in four while both Anthony Chavez and Joseph Evans chipped in two.

The Sandies, meanwhile, more than doubled their lead. Riley Chipman caught fire in the second quarter with nine points. McQuirter added five more to his total while Davis netted four, including his second dunk of the game. Dacorian Bryant and Kamari Smith each added two while both Wilson and Rick Frauenberger added one to close out the first half scoring with Grapeland ahead by a score of 43-12.

After halftime, the Sandies began to run time off of the clock but still managed to drop in 21 points in the third quarter. Parker Wilson knocked down two 3-pointers for six points in the third. McQuirter and R. Davis both dropped in four while Keriaun Davis drained a three-pointer of his own. Frauenberger and Josh Ackley closed out the third quarter scoring with two apiece.

The Indians were led in scoring by Evans with five and Johnson with four. Dawson Chumley added a basket and Eli Hardeman converted one of two from the charity stripe to make the score 64-24 after the third quarter.
