EAST TEXAS – It was a great opening week for the 2016 football season and with the exception of the Lovelady Lions, all the area teams were in action.

The Class 2A DII Grapeland Sandies traveled to Kountze to take on the Class 3A-DI Kountze Lions and were in the process of taming the big kitties by a score of 31-16 when the game was called because of deteriorating weather conditions. The Sandies home opener will be Sept. 2 against the Groveton Indians.

The Crockett Bulldogs opened the season at home and walloped the Trinity Tigers by a final score of 42-0. The Dawgs got contributions from the entire defense, offense and special teams as they scored 21 points in the both halves of the game. Crockett will be at home again this week as they host the Diboll Lumberjacks.

As mentioned earlier, the Lovelady Lions were off this week and will open their season on the road against the Anderson-Shiro Owls on Sept. 2

The Palestine Wildcats snapped an eight-game losing streak with a season opening 21-7 victory over the Mabank Panthers on Friday night at Panther Stadium. Tyler Gray scored from 40 yards out on Palestine’s first possession of the game and Wildcat QB Claude Rogers scored on Palestine’s opening drive of the second half. Irric Deyon also scored for Palestine midway through the fourth quarter as the Wildcat defense held the Panthers to under 200 yards of total offense on the night.

The Elkhart Elks used a big nights from DJ Williams and Hunter Bush to run rough shod over the Shelbyville Dragons by a final score of 42-28. The Elks will hit the road next week as they travel to Jewett to take on the Leon Cougars.

A close game at the half turned into a blow out in the third quarter as the Westwood Panthers welcomed the Frankston Indians to town and hammered them by a final score of 61-22. Running backs JD Clewis and Red Horse Warren led the offensive attack for the Panthers as both backs had nearly 200 yards on the ground. Westwood travels to Kirbyville next week for a game against the Wildcats.

Speaking of Wildcats, the Cayuga Wildcats won a low scoring affair against the Palmer Bulldogs by a final score of 13-0. The Wildcats scored a TD in the first and second quarters and then used a stingy defense to make the lead hold up Cayuga will be back in action next Friday against another set of Bulldogs as they travel to Wortham.

The Madisonville Mustangs were also involved in a low scoring affair as they used two safeties, a touchdown and an extra point to hold off the Diboll Lumberjacks by a final score of 11-8. The Mustangs will host the Woodville Eagles next Friday.

Unlike the previously described games, the Oakwood Panthers were involved in a high scoring affair in the world of six-man football as they took on the Zephyr Bulldogs. Unfortunately, the Panthers lost by a final of 58-30. Oakwood opens their home season next week as they welcome the Covington Owls to town.
