Grapeland Power Lifters Compete in Sulphur Springs

SULPHUR SPRINGS – On Saturday, Jan. 28, 15 athletes from Grapeland High School traveled to Sulphur Springs to compete in the Sulphur Springs Invitational Powerlifting Meet. The GHS team was comprised of 12 boys and three girls.

According to GHS Powerlifting Coach Matthew Gayle, “Grapeland was one of four 2A schools to compete in this meet, which included 16 other teams ranging from Class 6A to Class 3A.”

The team was bolstered by the presence of five freshmen who were competing in their first powerlifting meet “… and they did a great job,” Gayle said.

For the girls, Haylee Reed competed in the 114 pound class and finished in sixth place with a total of 535 pounds lifted. She recorded lifts of 230 pounds in the squat, 85 pounds in the bench press and 220 pounds in the dead lift.

Elizabeth Thorpe competed in the 148 pound class and finished sixth with a total lift of 680 pounds. She recorded lifts of 300 pounds in the squat, 130 pounds in the bench press and 250 pounds in the dead lift.

Competing in her first ever powerlifting meet, Cheyenne Bowman finished 28th in the 148 pound weight class with a total lift of 360 pounds.  She recorded lifts of 150 pounds in the squat, 75 pounds in the bench press and 135 pounds in the dead lift.

In the boys competition, Jaycob Elliot finished 16th in the 148 pound weight class with a total of 735 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 290 pounds in the squat, 165 pounds in the bench press and 280 pounds in the dead lift.

Bryan Perez also competed in the 148 pound weight class and finished 20th with a total of 605 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 245 pounds in the squat, 95 pounds in the bench press and 265 pounds in the dead lift.

Jay Shepherd finished 18th in the 165 pound weight class with a total of 810 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 335 pounds in the squat, 175 pounds in the bench press and 300 pounds in the dead lift.

Jayden Rodemaker also competed in the 165 pound weight class and finished 26th with a total of 415 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 285 pounds in the squat, 130 pounds in the bench press but did not record a weight total in the dead lift.

Spencer Martin finished 23rd in the 181 pound weight class with a total of 635 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 235 pounds in the squat, 140 pounds in the bench press and 260 pounds in the dead lift.

Ashton Henry finished sixth in the 198 pound weight class with a total of 1140 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 450 pounds in the squat, 205 pounds in the bench press and 485 pounds in the dead lift.

Aaron Davis finished ninth in the 220 pound weight class with a total of 1015 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 395 pounds in the squat, 205 pounds in the bench press and 415 pounds in the dead lift.

Cerdarian Davis finished 10th in the 242 pound weight class with a total of 965 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 385 pounds in the squat, 170 pounds in the bench press and 410 pounds in the dead lift.

Franco Rea finished ninth in the 275 pound weight class with a total of 1025 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 415 pounds in the squat, 240 pounds in the bench press and 370 pounds in the dead lift.

Jacob Barbosa also competed in the 275 pound weight class and finished 11th with a total of 995 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 425 pounds in the squat, 205 pounds in the bench press and 365 pounds in the dead lift.

In the Super Heavy Weight class, Joel Barbosa finished 11th with a total of 1185 lifted. He recorded lifts of 510 pounds in the squat, 260 pounds in the bench press and 415 pounds in the dead lift.

Tanner Keith also competed in the Super Heavy Weight Class and finished 17th with a total of 1000 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 475 pounds in the squat, 265 pounds in the bench press and 260 pounds in the dead lift.

The next meet for the GHS powerlifting team will be the Waco-Reicher Powerlifting Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 11.
