GHS Powerlifters Compete in Waco

 WACO – The Grapeland High School Powerlifting team traveled to Waco on Saturday, Feb. 11 to compete in the 20th Annual Reicher Powerlifting Meet at Reicher Catholic High School.

According to Powerlifting Head Coach Matthew Gayle, the team brought seven boys and two girls to the competition.

On the girls’ side, Cheyenne Bowman finished eighth in the 148 pound class with a total of 420 pounds lifted. She recorded lifts of 150 pounds in the squat, 75 pounds in the bench press and 195 pounds in the deadlift.

Bowman was joined in the girls’ competition by Elizabeth Thorpe who competed in the 165 pound class and finished sixth with a total of 650 pounds lifted. She recorded lifts of 265 pounds in the squat, 130 pounds in the bench press and 255 pounds in the deadlift.

“For the second time this year, Cameron Riess was awarded the meet’s best boys lifter of the heavy weight division. Riess is currently ranked number one in the state in the 181 pound class at the Division III level,” Gayle said.

Riess finished first in the 181 pound class with a total of 1480 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 600 pounds in the squat, 385 pounds in the bench press and 495 pounds in the deadlift. Riess also set a new meet record in the 181 pound class bench press part of the competition with his 385 pound lift, eclipsing the old mark by 35 pounds.

Riess was joined in the boys’ competition by Aaron Davis who competed in the 220 pound class and finished sixth with a total of 1070 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 445 pounds in the squat, 210 pounds in the bench press and 415 pounds in the deadlift.

Competing in the 242 pound class, Franco Rea finished ninth with a total of 1025 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 425 pounds in the squat, 230 pounds in the bench press and 370 pounds in the deadlift.

Also competing in the 242 pound class was Cerdarian Davis who finished in tenth place with a total of 1015 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 375 pounds in the squat, 190 pounds in the bench press and 450 pounds in the deadlift.

“Freshmen Bryan Perez and Jayden Rodemaker did a good job competing at the meet while Tanner Keith also attended but won’t lift again until the team competes in White Oak,” Gayle added.

The next meet for the Grapeland Powerlifting Team will be the 22nd East Texas Powerlifting Championships at White Oak High School on Saturday, Feb. 18.
